An absolutely remarkable single malt, this Caol Ila enthusiastically treads the peaty, smoked, medicinal and iodized paths that lead from Port Askaig to the village of Lagavulin. Fully aged in a first fill sherry butt, it possesses a delicate profile resembling both a deliciously honeyed liqueur as well as funky, nutty, over ripe fruit flavours with heady floral fragrances. In spite of the full term sherry maturation, the signature Caol Ila rocky and marine finish highlights the profile, showcasing the quality of the cask selection.
Caol Ila (pronounced “Cull Eela”), is the Gaelic name for the Sound of Islay, the narrow strait which separates the island from Jura. The name comes from its geographical location, which is less than a mile north of Port Askaig on the edge of the Sound of Islay.
In spite of being one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, the single malt that it produces enjoys a very high reputation amongst whisky lovers, being characteristically more smoky than peaty, mineral, undeniably marine and at the same time nicely fruity.
Distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2021 by G&M from a single first fill sherry butt, selected by LMDW, which yielded 562 bottles at a whopping 59.7% ABV, this is a glorious Caol Ila to be savoured on special occasions.
