Drookit Dug is a highly regarded, limited-edition blended Scotch whisky from the Scottish independent bottler, Little Brown Dog Spirits.
Designed as a "cask strength session dram", the 2011 vintage was matured for over a decade in refill sherry butts and bottled at a low natural cask strength, which makes for a pleasant, sweet, easy drinking whisky meant to be enjoyed by a wide audience.
The little brother of Little Brown Dog's well-loved Wee Mongrel, this is a vatting of high malt content blended Scotch whisky from two refill sherry butts, that had breathed hard and were getting close to empty. So while the ABV has dropped a fair bit in a short time, it’s still natural cask strength but at a very approachable 43.6% aka a cask strength session dram. Hence also the name Drookit Dug, a wetter counterpart of Wee Mongrel.
Low ABV, heavy breathing casks tend to be excellent whisky. Rather than achieving a reduction in ABV by dilution, casks that drop like this on their own have a great texture with no dilution of flavour and greater maturity. And this is just that - a very good whisky with balanced sherry influence, the kind of bottle to share with family or friends over a catch up.
These refill sherry butts were filled in 2011 with the same blend of Scotch whiskies, and were mixed together for bottling after 12 years producing an outturn of just 509 bottles, due to the significant loss from the heavy breathing casks.
