This rare, marine and earthy 12 year old Ledaig single malt was distilled in 2009 at the Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull, before being selected and bottled by Hidden Spirits to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of La Maison du Whisky.
The near-transparent colour suggests that the cask, in which it matured, had no influence on the palette of aromas and flavours, which are both elegant and complex. For Ledaig aficionados, this is an absolutely prodigious bottling, where the distillate appears in all its purity and depth. The famous earthy dirtiness of Ledaig is evident here, unadorned, as is its rocky, salty minerality. It is easy to understand, then, why this pure, even rustic, distillate-led instance of the wonderful Ledaig spirit was considered befitting for celebrating the milestone occasion.
Located on the Isle of Mull, the Tobermory distillery was founded in 1798. Renamed Ledaig in 1972 when it reopened after 42 years of closure, it was closed again in 1975 before reopening under the name Tobermory in 1989. It produces two single malts, one unpeated, eponymously called Tobermory, and the other peated (between 30-40ppm of phenols), under the name Ledaig. To develop the latter, the distillery obtains its barley from the Port Ellen malt house on Islay.
