A delightfully decadent Mannochmore from Little Brown Dog Spirits, distilled in 2009 and aged for 14 years, including a brief finish in a Pedro Ximénez (PX) hogshead, before being bottled at its natural cask strength of 51.9% ABV.
Because the PX finish was purposefully short, it acts more like a delicate finishing touch than a typical heavy sherried influence. In fact, “finish” might be too strong a word here; “rested” is probably a more accurate description of the tenure, as the whisky spent only 3 months in the PX cask (one of the Wee Mongrel Batch 2 casks). That was not supposed to be the case, though; however, it was exactly what was needed to balance the original spirit with a little more depth and sweetness.
The initial nose can be slightly feisty, but it opens up to a palate that is creamy, rich, and well-balanced. It delivers an incredibly smooth, complex finish with an expert integration of depth and added sweetness. Great liquid, just not a lot of it unfortunately with only 241 bottles from the hogshead, and sold out pretty much everywhere.
The woodpecker on the label is a nod to the very rare and limited official Diageo releases.
Colour: Ripe rye in the field
