An wonderful 2007 single malt from the Beast of Dufftown, Mortlach, matured in a single Oloroso sherry cask for 13 years, before being bottled in 2020 by indie bottler Càrn Mòr as part of its Strictly Limited series, with 732 bottles produced from the single cask.
Mortlach has a rather unusual setup for a Speyside distillery and all those peculiarities make their way into the distillery character, which is often referred to as 'meaty', earning it the moniker, The Beast of Dufftown. It is precisely these meaty notes that can be found in this independently bottled malt and they are expertly complemented by the beautiful Oloroso sherry cask, which interacts nicely with it without overtaking the malt. Perfectly balanced without being overly complex, this is an incredible single malt that needs time to express itself fully in the glass and rewards the drinker handsomely when provided that.
TASTING NOTES:
Nose: Caramelised red fruits, plum compote, BBQ sauce, honey, a little mint, marzipan chocolate, vanilla cream, orange peel, baked apple and cinnamon and a touch of coconut.
Palate: Lively and crisp mouthfeel, with a sprinkling of white pepper and ginger on plum, ripe apple, cinnamon, chocolate, orangeade. Perfect drinking strength. Sweet and tart at the same time. The meatiness typical of Mortlach is clearly noticeable on the palate.
Finish: Quite long and dry finish of ginger, chocolate, honey, bitter orange, nutmeg.
